Twelve stats about mothers in South Africa

This Mother's day, you may have bought your mother a card, or perhaps called her, but have you ever thought of what life is like for the average mother in South Africa?

Mothers truly are the foundation of this nation, but what do you know about them? What are some of the day to day struggles they have to endure? We have gathered some startling facts about mothers in SA. Did you know:
1. According to the 2001 Census, there are around 8.5 million mothers in South Africa under the age of 50.
2. Nearly 80% of South African women between the ages of 20 and 50 are mothers.
3. One third of mothers under the age of 50 have one child. Some 21% have four or more children.
4. Only half of mothers aged 50 or less are married or living with a partner.
5. Almost four million mothers are not married or living with a partner. Of these, 3.3 million were never married.
6. There are around 2.8 million working mothers in SA under the age of 50.
7. Some three million are not economically active while a further 2.6 million are unemployed according to the official definition.
8. Official unemployment of mothers (under 50) with young children is 35% compared to 23% for men (under 65).
9. Around 8 000 babies are born to HIV-infected mothers in South Africa each month.
10. Approximately 25%-30% of HIV infected mothers in South Africa will transmit the HIV infection to their child.
11. Up to 30% of new mothers in South Africa (an estimated minimum of 50 000 mothers per year) are clinically ill with depression or anxiety disorders.
12. It is estimated that there are 1,000,000 children without mothers in South Africa due to the AIDS pandemic.
